All bridges lead to valley bliss
It is easy to see why the township of Gisborne is a popular destination for city dwellers wanting a gentle tree change.
Situated in a valley and blessed with sweeping mountain views, scenic parklands and a meandering creek dotted with pretty footbridges, it is only a 40-minute car or train ride from the Melbourne CBD and has outstanding leisure facilities, a progressive retail precinct and a selection of schools.
Community growth has prompted the expansion and development of a range of amenities such as the Gisborne Aquatic Centre and the planned adventure playground, which will cater for children of all ages and abilities.
Blink in this town and you may miss one of the three supermarkets, two pubs, numerous eateries, or several medical and allied health practices. Or you’ll overlook something truly beautiful like the elegant bronze fountain that came to Gisborne from Chelsea in London.
There are parks for playing, parks for competing, parks for picnicking and there’s the Botanical Gardens, which is worth at least an hour for quiet contemplation and to admire the indigenous flora and birdlife, and spectacular totem erected to commemorate Gisborne’s sister city in New Zealand.
The footy and tennis facilities are the envy of other clubs while other recreation opportunities abound at the community and fitness centres.
Some of the best panoramic views of the Macedon Ranges are on offer at the picturesque 18-hole golf course, which recently underwent improvements.
Crowds flock to the monthly art and craft markets, and annual events such as the Vintage Machinery Display and Tractor Pull, Gisborne Fitness Classic and the community festival.
On the town’s outskirts lie award-winning wineries including Bindi and Gisborne Peak.
Gisborne’s location in the Macedon Ranges makes it very accessible to other towns and regional attractions. It is also a gateway to Bacchus Marsh and Geelong via the stunning Lerderderg Gorge.
But with so much to enjoy in their own backyards new residents have a tendency to plant their feet quite firmly here, perhaps dangling a toe in Jacksons Creek when the mercury rises throughout summer.
